Abstract
This study aims to analyze the profile of temperature, salinity, and density so as to know Isothermal Layer Depth (ILD), Mixed Layer Depth (MLD) and Barrier Layer Thickness (BLT) in Bay of Bengal. BLTs in the Bay of Bengal are identified by the variability of rainfall, river water runoff and evaporation. The data used are daily data for temperature, salinity, density, rainfall, river water runoff and evaporation data obtained from NOAA and ECMWF website for the period of 2015 and processed using FERRET software. After the calculation to find the value of ILD, MLD and BLT, then do the low pass filter, Fast Fourier Transform and band pass filter, so that will be obtained correlation and variants for ILD, MLD and BLT are also affected by rainfall, runoff and evaporation. Based on the results of the analysis, the profile of surface temperature is 27-33 ℃. Salinity in the Bay of Bengal is quite low ranging from 32-34 PSU, this is due to the large number of freshwater flux enter the intensity of rainfall ranged from 0.00 to 2.60 mm / day. The deepest BLT occurred in January with depths ranging from ± 65 m and the most shallow BLT occurred in March - May with depths ranging from ± 10 m above sea level. In general, evaporation in the Bay of Bengal is smaller compared to rainfall, so the evaporation in the Bay of Bengal in 2015 does not significantly affect the BLT.
