Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of quenching on SMAW welded joints and find out which quenching media gives the best hardness. With the combustion temperature reaching the austenite temperature or around 760º C using quenching water, salt water and oil. The research was conducted in April 2019 using a rockwell hardness testing machine with Hardness Rockwell Cone (HRC) units. The test results revealed that the welding of 80 A current experienced an increase in the initial hardness before quenching with water at 34.2 HRC increased after quenching treatment which was equal to 38.8 HRC with water, 37.5 HRC with salt water, and 36.2 HRC with oil . Likewise in the welding of 100 A current which was initially before quenching at 35.6 HRC increased after quenching at 37.5 HRC with water, 38.5 HRC with salt water, and 37 HRC with oil. From the data it is seen that there was a change in hardness on the welded joints from before and after quenching. While the best quenching media is salt water media.
