Abstract

Intravenous insertion in hospitals in Indonesia is high but the venipuncture skills of nurses is still low, reaching 50.8%. In fact, 80% of inpatients receive venipuncture. The purpose of this study was to develop a prototype of an infrared-based metacarpal vein scanner : making the tool, determining the working principle of the tool, determining the level of user satisfaction and practicality of the tool. This study used a descriptive research design with research and development aapproach using the Borg & Gall model. This study had 2 testing groups, namely initial field testing and field testing. An assessment of the tool was carried out in the initial field, and the revision was made to adjust the tool. In the field testing, user satisfaction and practicality of the tool were assessed. The number of respondents in this study were 20 students and 14 nurses. A Likert-scale questionnaire was used to find the level of user satisfaction and practicality of the tool. This study resulted in an infrared-based scanner to view the veins in the metacarpal section; this tool can be held with only one hand by the user. The results showed that the level of satisfaction reached 89.36% and the practicality of the tool 80.26%. The tool is quite good at scanning the veins in the metacarpal section, the veins look bigger, the tool is easy to use, the visualization of veins is visible in real time and the users feel comfortable when using the tool. The prototype of this infrared-based metacarpal vein scanner still needs further development.
