Abstract
Yam (Pachyrhizus erosus (L.) Urban contains flavonoid compounds and phenolic substances that can prevent skin damage due to free radicals and inhibit melanin formation. The yam starch is formulated by coating particles with chitosan and sodium alginate polymers by ionic gelation method so that it changes the shape of yam starch particles into submicro particle form with the aim of increasing the penetration of the preparation into the skin, the submicro particle component consisting of yam starch, chitosan, sodium alginate and CaCl2 using various concentrations of CaCl2. The optimum formula obtained has an EE percent value of 82.36%. Characterization results of submicro particles such as diameter and particle size distribution (PDI) using a particle size analyzer (PSA) of 3071,148 nm and 0.403. The results of the XRD study showed changes in particle shape from crystals to amorphous in submicro particle so that the body was easier to accept. In vivo test using male Wistar strain white rats with 5 treatments and 3 replications. The time of the study consisted of 7 days of sun exposure and 4 days of gel submicro particle test. Skin lightening activity test of the yam starch submicro particles was carried out with a variety of 1%, 2%, and 3% HPMC concentrations. The results showed that the optimum formula was found in the gel with 2% HPMC concentration. The results of statistical analysis of changes in the brightness level of mouse skin color with normality test, one way annova test, and post hoc test with SPSS® 16 program showed that the data were normally distributed, all concentrations in the treatment group had a significant difference to the control group with p value < 0.05.
