Abstract
Countries with abundant natural resource wealth, in international trade, tend to rely more on production from the agricultural, plantation, forestry and mining sectors as the main export commodities. Indonesia, as one of the countries with great natural resource potential, takes advantage of this potential in its international trade activities. Meanwhile, the commodity of plantation products from Indonesia which is in great demand by the world market is the commodity of natural rubber with South Sumatra as the largest producing area. The large potential for the natural rubber commodity in South Sumatra makes it one of the mainstay export commodities of South Sumatra Province. This is driven by climatic and geographic factors in South Sumatra Province which are suitable for planting rubber to be produced every year. Natural rubber consistently contributes over 20% of the total exports of South Sumatra. However, in recent years, the commodity natural rubber has faced obstacles, with the selling price of natural rubber per kilogram experiencing a downward trend. This study aims to explain why there has been a decline in the price of natural rubber from South Sumatra in the international market. The concept used in this study, namely the concept of the Global Value Chain which is then described through six dimensions to further analyze the problems discussed in this study. Meanwhile, this research method is a qualitative method. The results of this study indicate that the decline in the price of natural rubber from South Sumatra in the international market is caused by domestic factors and foreign factors. Internal factors, namely the long production value chain and trading system in the natural rubber plantation industry in South Sumatra. External factors, namely the addition of other countries to become new producers of natural rubber.
