Abstract

Introduction. The prevalence of septic patients which treated in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ranges from 20-80%, with mortality prevalence ranging from 20-50%. Fluid therapy is importance therapy for septic patients. However, excessive fluid therapy can increase patient mortality. Several studies have shown that cumulative fluid balance affects the death of septic patients. This study aims to investigate whether cumulative fluid balance is associated with mortality of septic patients. Methods. Sample of this cohort retrospective designed study was septic patients which treated in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2017 with total sampling. A total of 103data met the inclusion criteria. Patients mortality and cumulative fluid balance got from medical record were analysed using Chi-square test and Kaplan Meier methode with Mantel-Haenszel log-rank test. Results. Out of 103 data, 64% septic patients died in 28 days and 84,4% septic patients who died had positive cumulative fluid balance. This study proved that there is a highly significant association betweencumulative fluid balance and mortality of septic patients with the p-value of 0,001 (Chi-square test). The 28 days survival probability of septic patients affected by cumulative fluid balance has a significant association with the p-value of 0,001 (Mantel-Haenszel log-rank test). Conclusion. There is a highly significant association between cumulative fluid balance and mortality of septic patients. Strict monitoring on fluid therapy is needed to prevent mortality rate of septic patients.
