Abstract
Palm kernel shell is solid waste which has the prospect of being reused to increase its economic value, one of which is converted into liquid smoke through a pyrolysis process. The pyrolysis batch reactor used is equipped with a stirrer and the smoke condensation process uses a refrigeration system to maintain cooling water at a temperature of 18oC. The yield of liquid smoke from the pyrolysis process was obtained by varying the size of the palm shells, pyrolysis temperature, and pyrolysis time. The palm kernel shells used are obtained from PT. Hindoli, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province and the composition of the compound was tested first, with the results obtained by Cellulose 11.52%, Hemicellulose 2.68%, Lignin 76.22%, Water Content 12.18%, and Ash 3.19 %. The pyrolysis results obtained showed the effect of process parameters on the yield of liquid smoke with a maximum yield of 28.64% liquid smoke at 350oC pyrolysis temperature, 5 hours pyrolysis time, and -5 + 7 mesh palm shell size. Liquid smoke was tested using a Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) tool, the test results showed that 56.61% Phenol was the largest composition in liquid smoke. This result is due to the large amount of lignin contained in the palm kernel shell.
