Abstract

Background: Stature is an important parameter, both in medicolegal for individual identification and for patient care in assessing nutritional status. Stature growth is influenced by many factors, one of which is race. Racial differences can cause differences in individual stature. The majority of the population of Indonesia is Deutromalay subrace. In individuals with certain conditions such as patients with lower limb fractures, stature measurements cannot be carried out as usual. Such conditions trigger the development of the idea of estimating stature using other body segments, which are then transformed into a formula for stature predictions models. This study aims to determine the correlation of stature with the handlength and handbreadth in the Deutromalay subrace. Methods: This study was an observational descriptive study with a cross sectional design. This study involved 112 medical students of Sriwijaya University from Deutromalay subrace comprising of 36 males and 76 females. The measurement of hand length and hand breadth were carried out using a vernier caliper. Stature was measured using microtoise. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, Pearson correlation test and simple linear regression test. Results: Handlength had a significant correlation with stature with a coefficient correlation ranging from 0,703 to 0,831 (p<0,05). The handbreadth was significantly positively correlated with stature, the correlation coefficient ranges from 0.410 to 0.440 (p<0.05). In this study a number of linear regression equations were obtained, with the Standard Error of Estimate (SEE) ranging from 2.779 to 5.120 (p <0.05). Conclusion: Statures had a strong positive correlation with the handlength and a moderate positive correlation with the handbreadth in the Deutromalay subrace.
