Abstract

Background: Dental anxiety is an unpleasant psychological response to dental stimulation as defined by negative feelings about dental treatment. One of the factors that can affect dental anxiety is age, gender, fear of pain and parental anxiety. Objective: to determine the effect of parental anxiety on fear of pain in children aged 6-12 years in dental care. Materials and Methods: This research is an analytic survey with a cross sectional design approach. The subjects of this study were children aged 6-12 years who came with their parents to perform dental treatment and were recorded in the medical records at the Dental and Oral Special Hospital in the province of South Sumatera from February to March 2021 as many as 40 respondents using purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used Modified Dental Anxiety Scale to measure parental anxiety and short-Fear of Dental Pain questionnaire to measure children’s fear of pain in dental care. Result: The frequency distribution shows that the highest level of parental anxiety is found in parents who have moderate anxiety level having chidrens with moderate fear of pain level as much as 73,3%. The p-value is 0,027 (P<0,05) which is statistically significant, meaning that there is a significant effect between parental anxiety and fear of pain in children aged 6-12 years in dental care. Conclusion: Parental anxiety has a significant effect on fear of pain in children aged 6-12 years in dental care.
