Abstract

Multi-storey building is not free from the risk of fire. The higher the building, the more activity and combustible materials that have potential to cause fires. PT Bank X Palembang Office Building consists of 12 floors. The work process in this building involves a lot of electronic equipment that is connected to a network of electric cables which, if not properly protected, can trigger fires due to electrical short circuits. The characteristics of a multi-storey building will also complicate the extinguishing and evacuation process if there is no good and adequate fire safety system. This research aims to evaluate the implementation of fire safety system in PT Bank X Palembang Office Building using the Computerized Fire Safety Evaluation System software. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive approach through in-depth interview method, FSES Worksheet and NFPA 101 observation checklist. There were 14 informants in this research consisting of 12 informants and 2 key informants. The results showed that the fire safety parameters which included construction, segregation of hazard, sprinklers, fire alarm system, smoke control, exit access, exit systems, compartments and occupancy emergency program categorized according to NFPA 101 standards; smoke detectors and interior finishes are categorized quite according to NFPA 101 standards; while the categorized vertical openings do not comly with NFPA 101 standards. The CFSES evaluation of these 12 parameters resulted in a fire spread control value (10.1 standard 12.5), mean of egress values (4.5 standards 7.5) and general fire safety values (15.6 standard 13), which means that in general the fire safety system owned by the PT Bank X Palembang office building is categorized as reliable for preventing and tackling fires. However, the system is at risk of failure because there are still deficiencies in the fire spread control and mean of egress system. The conclusion shows that the implementation of fire safety system in PT Bank X Palembang office building has not met the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code standard. This standard will be met by optimizing improvements to the safety parameters of smoke detector, interior finish and vertical openings.
