Abstract
Worm diseases is common in Indonesia with 31.8% prevalence based on Ministry of Health data of 2012. Pirantel pamoat which is a drug of choice for ascariasis has many side effects and has caused resistance in some cases. Cordyline fruticosa (L.) A. Chev. leaves contains flavonoid compounds, tannins, saponins, and phenolic compounds that are efficacious as anthelmintic. This research was conducted to find out the anthelmintic potency of the juice and the ethanol extract of C. fruticosa leaves against Ascaris suum, Goeze worm. C. fruticosa leaves juice was obtained by addition of aquades and smoothing, while ethanol extract was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol. Tests were performed on 16 treatment groups consisting of negative control group (NaCl 0.9%), juice (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%), ethanol extract (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%), and the positive control group (pirantel pamoat 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5%), in an incubator at 37 ° C with a time limit 45 hours. The C. fruticosa ethanol extract has a specific characteristic of thick, dark brown, aroma like tea, water soluble extract 44.6 ± 0.264%, ethanol soluble extract 81.566 ± 0.321%, and chemical content of flavonoid, phenolic, saponin, steroids, and tannins, and having non-specific characteristics with percent water content, shrinkage dried, and density respectively of 7.6 ± 0.1%, 7.681 ± 0.067%%, and 1.013 ± 0.001 g/mL. The test results show that the juice and ethanol extract have antelmintic potency to Ascaris suum, Goeze in vitro. The LC50 and LT50 juice is 23.957% and 8.125 hours, while ethanol extract is 19.426% and 5.334 hours, where its anthelmintic potency is lower than pirantel pamoat which has LC50 0.224% and LT50 2.708 hours.
