Abstract

Early marriage is a phenomenon that occurs in Indonesia, which is a developing country with a high percentage of early marriage in the world. Early pregnancy can increase the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight (LBW), infant mortality, and malnutrition. The cause of LBW is a multifactorial problem such as age at pregnancy, education level, income, multiple pregnancies, infections, and chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The incidence of LBW is an indicator of public health that is closely related to the incidence of death, morbidity, and malnutrition and has a long-term impact. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between early pregnancy and the incidence of low birth weight (LBW). This research is a correlational analytic study with an approach cross-sectional. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling technique randomly by determining 4 sub-districts from 18 sub-districts in Palembang City and then continued with the accidental sampling method. The sample in this research is mothers who have babies aged 0-12 months totaling 134 respondents. The sample calculation uses a two-proportion hypothesis test formula. Data analysis was univariate, bivariate, and multivariate. The bivariate analysis used was the chi-square test and Fisher exact test. Meanwhile, the multivariate data analysis used the Logistic Regression Test. The results of this study indicate that the variable early pregnancy (p-value = 0.018 OR = 1.7 95% CI = 1.22-5.08), multiple pregnancy (p-value = 0.006 95% CI = 1.96-2 , 97) associated with LBW incidence while maternal education, parity, pregnancy complications, family income, and ANC are not associated with the incidence of LBW. But from the results on the multivariate analysis, it was found that low family income was 2.1 times the risk of giving birth to LBW, mothers who did not comply with ANC had 1.6 times the risk of giving birth to LBW and pregnant women at an early age had 1.7 times the risk of giving birth to LBW. Based on the results of the study, it is expected that respondents who have a history of giving birth to babies with low birth weight should pay more attention and provide optimal and adequate nutrition to their babies, as well as mothers who give birth to babies with normal birth weight.
