Abstract
Wuluh starfruit leaves have properties as antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and as antibacterial. The results of the examination of the chemical content showed that leaves of wuluh starfruit contained saponin, flavonoids, triterpenoids and tannins. The safety of using wuluh starfruit leaves as a natural medicine preparation must be supported by scientific research on toxicity testing. This study aims to determine the toxic dose range of ethanol extract of wuluh starfruit leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) and its effect on macroscopic organs and blood biochemical parameters in male wistar rats using the fixed dose method. Ethanol extract of wuluh starfruit leaves was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol. The initial dose chosen for the main test is determined from the results obtained in the preliminary test. Based on the preliminary test, a dose of 2000 mg/kgBW is determined as the initial dose for the main test. In the main test, the test animals were divided into 2 groups, normal control group and 2000 mg/kgBW dose group, each of which used 5 test animals. Observations on the main test showed that there were no deaths or toxic symptoms in the normal control group and 2000 mg/kgBW dose group. Based on the research that has been done, the range of toxic doses of ethanol extract of wuluh starfruit leaves which causes acute toxicity is >2000 mg/kgBW. Ethanol extract of wuluh starfruit leaves at a dose of 2000 mg/kgBW had no effect on the macroscopic organs of the liver, kidneys, and heart of the test animals. The average level of biochemical parameters in the normal control group was SGOT 122.8 ± 11.300 U/L, SGPT 55.6 ± 9.370 U/L, creatinine 0.72 ± 0.083 mg/dL, and ureum 23.2 ± 0.836 mg/dL. While the 2000 mg/kgBW dose group is SGOT 120.2 ± 6.457 U/L, SGPT 51.8 ± 10.940 U/L, creatinine 0.7 ± 0.1 mg/dL, and ureum 23 ± 1 mg/dL.
