Abstract

Shopping Mall had a high classification of fire risk according to Kepmen PU No.11 in 2000, Fire cases in malls occur every year. Based on Marketing Research Indonesia, Palembang City has the highest ranked in number of visitor. All residents of the mall have a high risk of fire including visitor. Preparedness is important program in reduction fire disaster. The purpose of this study to conduct fire preparedness research by looking the parameters of knowledge, attitude, fire protection system, resource mobilization, policy, and emergency response plan. This research was a qualitative descriptive study. The sample of this study is 10 people which consist of operational manager, engineering, security, employee, and visitors. The information gathered by in-depth interviews, field observation sheets, and checklist sheets. The result of this research shows that mall employees have knowledge of fire preparedness. This because the mall has conducted fire training exercises regularly. Training and simulations of fire are followed by mall employees and some tenant employees. Most tenant and visitor employees only know that preparedness is sourced from fire facilities and infrastructure so the attitude of tenant and visitor when fire occurs is panic and save themselves. Although the results of observations found fire protection systems including fire extinguishers, hydrants, and rescue facilities still have some indicators isn’t enough as requirements, such as emergency exits are still used for way out. The implementation of fire preparedness in the PS Mall there are still some shortcomings of the parameters of knowledge and attitude of tenant employees as well as visitors and means of fire protection. The researchers suggest that fire simulation training should include tenant and visitor employees, set up a prohibition board for not using emergency exits for public purposes, and directions for special arrows for evacuation routes.
