Abstract
Salam leaves (Syzygium polyanthum Wight.) empirically have been used as traditional antidiabetic drugs. Male Wistar albino rats are used as animal models which divide into 6 group, normal group, negative control group (Na CMC 0,5%), positive control group (Metformin 150 mg/kgBB), and 3 test group (ethyl acetate extract of salam leaves 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kgBB). The result of characterization of moisture content 7.07%, loss on drying content 7.62%, ash content 11.02%, and insoluble ash content in acid 6,41%. Phytochemical test ekstrak showed the content of flavonoid, phenolic, and alkaloid. The result of AUC30-45 and percentage of decreasing blood glucose level for positive control group are 1900.30 and 70.83%, and 3 test group (250 mg/kgBB, 500 mg/kgBB, dan 1000 mg/kgBB) are 1940.32 and 62.13% ; 1909.36 and 68.88%; 1819 and 88.21%. This point indicate that ethyl acetat extract of salam leaves has an antidiabetic activity and there is no significant difference compared with metformin (p>0,05). According to the relation between percentage of blood glucose level with dose, value of ED50 of ethyl acetate extract of salam leaves is 213.46 mg/kgBB. Histopathological results of the pancreas showed an improvement in the group that treated with salam leaves extract at doses of 250, 500 and 1000mg/kgBB comparing other groups. Which is dose of 1000mg/kgBB gives the best impact Keyword(s): ethyl acetat extract, salam leaves, antidiabetic, high fat and fructose diet, the pancreas histopathology
