Abstract
Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is the most common lesion in the oral cavity, this lesion causes damage to the mucosal tissue in the oral cavity and can cause pain in the affected area so treatment is necessary to accelerate healing. Gambier extract with a concentration of 10% is known to have the ability to accelerate the healing of minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis, while enzymes from papaya are reported to improve the quality and shelf life of an ingredient. Objective: To determine the effect of gambir extract with papaya enzymes on the healing of minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Methods: This study was conducted on 27 Sriwijaya University students who suffered from minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis which were divided into 3 groups, namely the gambier extract ointment group with papaya enzymes, Aloclair gel, and placebo were used 3 times a day for 7 days and measured independently using a flexible ruler on days 0, 1, 3 and 7. Results: The RAS lesion area on day 1 compared with days 3 and 7 showed a difference. which was significant in the gambier extract ointment group with papaya enzymes and aloclair gel. Healing on days 3 and 7 showed a significant difference in SAR lesion area in the gambier extract ointment group with papaya enzymes while the aloclair gel group showed no significance (p<0.05). Conclusion: Gambier extract ointment with papaya enzymes was effective in accelerating the duration of healing and reducing the size of minor type of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS).
