Abstract

Background: Ulceration can be treated with topical drugs, such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiseptic drugs, but long-term use of topical drugs can precipitate fungal infections. Indonesia has excessively plants that efficacious as medicine, include unripe papaya. Several studies have shown that unripe papaya contains papain and saponins that can increase the number of fibroblasts in the wound healing process with the result that wound healing process will be accelerated. Aim: To determine the effect of unripe papaya extract gel on healing process of wistar rats’ oral ulcers. Methods: A true experimental laboratory research with posttest only control group design was established. 24 male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. Ulcers were made on the labial mucosa of mandibular rats by heat induction. Ulcer was treated with placebo gel and 20%, 25% and 30% unripe papaya gel for 4 days. On 5th day, the rats were euthanized and ulcerated mucosal tissue was biopsied to counts the number of fibroblasts using Olympus software. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS statistics 25. Result : 25% papaya fruit extract gel had the highest mean of fibroblasts. Based on the post hoc test, there were significant differences between groups treated with papaya fruit extract gel 25% and 30% compared to groups treated with placebo gel (p<0.05). Conclusion : 25% and 30% unripe papaya fruit extract gel have an increase healing process by enhancing the number of fibroblasts in the ulcers healing process.
