Abstract

Films have an impact on a person's way of thinking, text and images then synergize to form a narrative and a message to convey. Prenjak film (The Year of Monkey) appears with the issue of the old prostitution culture in Yogyakarta, the practice of prostitution represented by this film is interesting to examine by knowing how the representation of prostitution in Prenjak film. The analytical method used in this research is semiotic film analysis of the Christian Metz which emphasizes the denotation or signs seen on the screen, this research used social pathology theory. The result of the research in this film is the problem of working women with a frame that tends to exploit groups with disabilities. The old prostitution phenomenon reconstructed in this film depicts genitals as symbols. Economic pressure, poverty, and other economic considerations for living as the factors.
