Abstract
Background: The bisecting angulation technique is an alternative to the parallel technique of periapical radiographs. The most commonly used of the maxillary incisor vertical angulation are +40 degrees for the North American population, +40 degrees for India population, and +45 to +55 degrees for Brazil population. The vertical angulation of bisecting technique may need to adjust to the proclination of the teeth which could be affected by races such as Indonesia which belong to the Mongoloid race. The present study aimed to determine an overview of vertical angulation of bisecting periapikal radiograph technique based on maxillary incisor inclination incisors of dentistry student Sriwijaya University. Method: This observational descriptive study was done with a cross sectional design using 67 dental casts from class of 2016-2017 student. The inclusion criterias of dental cast were in good condition of central incisor, class I malocclusion and normal overjet (2-4 mm). The dummy film was placed and fixed as close to the palate as possible. The angle formed between the long axis of the tooth and the occlusal line (BAO) and the angle formed between the axis of the film and the occlusal line (DAO) was measured using a protractor. The vertical angulation was calculated using the principle of geometry which then was processed descriptively. Result: The range of vertical angulations of the bisecting angle technique obtained was +37.50 to +61.50 degrees with a median value of +46.50 degrees and an average value of +47.57 degrees. Conclusion: The average value of vertical angulation in this study was still within the range of vertical angulation used in the Brazilian population.
