Abstract

The current experiment was conducted to study the effects of compost (Water Hyacinth-Rument) on soil available N, and N uptake and yield of lettuce (.Lacluca sativa L.) in Ultisols. It was a greenhouse experiment arranged in factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) which tested 2 treatments, i.e. compost rate (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 ton ha'1) and nitrogen rate (0, 50%, and 100% of recommended rate), with 3 replicates. The addition 5 ton compost ha'1 yielded the highest N availability and uptake of N the highest yield was observed on plants received 20 ton of compost ha'1. The use of 50% of the recommended rate of nitrogen application resulted in the highest available N in soil, while the highest N uptake was observed on plant receiving full rate of N application. Nevertheless, the use of N fertilizer did not affect lettuce yield. The highest availability of NO3 and NH4+N was observed on soils receiving 20 tones of compost ha 1 combined with 100% N application rate, and 20 tones of compost ha 1 without N application repeatedly. The highest N uptake was observed in plants receiving 5 tones compost ha'1 combined with 100% of N application rate. The highest yield was observed in plants receiving 20 tones of compost ha'1 combined with 50% of recommended rate of N application
