Abstract

Background: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women in the world. In 2018 an estimated 570,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than 50% have died from cervical cancer. Treatment of advanced stage cervical cancer is chemotherapy which can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bone marrow depression (anemia, thrombocytopenia and neutropenia). This can delay treatment and increase mortality and morbidity rates. In previous studies, it is known that chemotherapy side effects can be influenced by the incidence of Body Mass Index (BMI), age, chemotherapy regimen, chemotherapy series, and cancer stage. This study aims to determine whether or not there is a significant relationship between the factors that influence the side effects of chemotherapy. Methods: This analytical descriptive research was conducted at Dr. RSUP. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. With a cross sectional study design. On secondary data medical records. Obtained 257 samples. Which was analyzed using SPSS version 26 with chi-square test (p < 0.05). Results: The prevalence of side effects of chemotherapy in cervical cancer patients for the period January 1, 2018 – December 31, 2020 is bone marrow depression 94.5% (the largest number is with anemia patients 45.1%) and Gastrointestinal Tract 62.6% (The largest number is with nausea patients vomiting 49%). Statistically there was no significant relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI), age, chemotherapy regimen, chemotherapy series, and stage of cancer with the incidence of chemotherapy side effects. Conclution: There was no significant relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI), age, chemotherapy regimen, chemotherapy series, and cancer stage.
