Abstract
ABSTRACT THE RELATIONSHIP OF BODY MASS INDEX AND HYPERTENSION STATUS IN PATIENTS AT MERDEKA HEALTH CARE CENTER OF PALEMBANG (Zamila Dinda Hersyadha,30 December 2021, 64 pages) Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University Background: Blood pressure is regarded as the pressure of blood pushing against the arterial walls of the body. This pressure is generated by the pumping action of the heart. Hypertension or high blood pressure has been commonly known as an increase in blood pressure according to the classification determined by JNC VII 2003, namely systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg or from the results of a doctor’s diagnosis, symptoms and history of taking hypertension medication. Referring to the results of Basic Health Research in 2018, the prevalence of hypertension was amounted to 34.1%. This figure was found to be increasing compared to the results of Basic Health Research in 2013, which indicated that blood pressure and hypertension rates in Indonesian people aged 18 years and over were amounted to 25.8%. Obesity is considered as one of the risk factors that may determine the severity of hypertension, because the increased body mass requires more blood to meet the needs of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and other tissues in the body. Having regard to this matter, this research was intended to identify the relationship of body mass index to hypertension. Method: This research was classified as an analytic observational research with a cross sectional design. The data in this research were derived from medical record data at Merdeka Health Care Center for the period of July to August 2021. The samples in this research were determined by means of the total sampling method. Data analysis was carried out descriptively and analytically in accordance with the research objectives. Results: Referring to the research conducted on 276 patients, the frequency distribution of underweight BMI consisted of 99 (50.5%) patients with hypertension and 97 (49.5%) patients without hypertension. In patients with overweight BMI, 55 (68.8%) were found to have hypertension and 25 (31.3%) did not have hypertension. Moreover, the results of statistical tests by using Chi Square succeeded in showing p value = 0.008 with α = 0.05 (p>α). This shows that there was a significant relationship between body mass index and hypertension status in patients at the Merdeka Health Care Center. Furthermore, the results indicated that overweight patients had 2156 times the potential for hypertension compared to overweight patients (95%CI=1.244 -3.734). Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between body mass index and hypertension status in patients at the Merdeka Health Care Center.
