Abstract
Background: Colorectal carcinoma is the most common gastrointestinal malignancy, and the incidence is increase every year. More than 90% of colorectal malignancies are adenocarcinomas, which are malignancies of epithelial origin with glandular or mucinous differentiation. PD-L1 is one of the immune checkpoints that is currently being widely studied because of its important role in the process of malignancy development. PD-L1 is considered to be a factor that influences prognosis and one of the treatment targets in cancer immunotherapy. Method: This research is an analytic observational study with a case series study design. Immunohistochemical examination was carried out on 35 samples that met the research criteria to determine the expression of PD-L1. PD-L1 expression was assessed semi-quantitatively by calculating the immunoreactivity score that obtained from the sum of the staining intensity score and distribution of tumor cells with positive membrane staining. PD-L1 expression was considered positive if the total immunoreactivity score was ≥3. Result: From 35 samples, 18 (51.4%) of them were male and 17 (48.6%) were female, and more samples were in the age group ≥50 years with a total of 65.7%. The most common subtype was adenocarcinoma, NOS with 88.6%. Positive PD-L1 expression was found in 94.3% of the samples, while the remaining 5.7% had negative PD-L1 expression. Conclusion: Most of the samples showed positive PD-L1 expression which was dominated by samples with weak staining intensity. Keywords: colorectal adenocarcinoma, programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1)
