Abstract
The research on synthesis and characterization of composites ZnO-Fe2O3 for photodegradation of methylene blue has been done. The photodegradation process of methylene blue was carried out in several variables including the effect of contact time and the initial concentration of the dye as well as in the above conditions pHpzc. ZnO-Fe2O3 composites were made with a mole ratio of ZnO to Fe2O3 (1:0.5), (1:1) and (1:1.5) and characterized using XRD, UV-Vis DRS and SEM-EDS instruments. The ZnO-Fe2O3 (1:1) composite was selected as a photocatalyst to degrade methylene blue. The result of characterization using XRD showed crystal size the ZnO-Fe2O3 (1:1) composites result were 10,40 nm. Energy bandgap value of the ZnO-Fe2O3 (1:1) composites obtained from the UV-Vis DRS characterization results were 1.81 eV. The result ZnO-Fe2O3 (1:1) composites characterization using SEM-EDS showed that heterogeneous surface shape with small particle size and equally distribution. The constituent elements of Zn, Fe and O are 22.62%, 54.84% and 22.55%.The optimum conditions for photodegradation were obtained at a contact time of 180 minutes with the percent degradation effectiveness of 74.6%. As for the effect of the initial concentration of the dye, it was found that the greatest percentage of greatest dye concentration reduction effectiveness was at a concentration of 5 ppm with the percent effectiveness of 71.2%. and test result of 3 ppm with a percent of 100%. The results showed that the ZnO-Fe2O3 composite was able to degrade the methylene blue.
