Abstract
Introduction: The use of cinnamon in daily life, either as a cooking ingredient or as herbal therapy, is unknown and there has been no previous research on the efficacy of cinnamon extract as a renoprotector. This studi aims to determine the efficacy of the ethanolic extract of cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum burmannii) whether it can act as a renoprotector in lowering urea levels in the kidney. Method: Experimental research in vivo the pre-post test with control group design has been conducted at the Animal House Laboratory and the Biotechnology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University which took place in November-December 2021. The research sample was 30 male white rats (Rattus norvegcus) wistar strain which were divided into five groups, namely negative control, positive control, cinnamon ethanol extract dose of 50 mg/kgBW, 100mg/kgBW and 200 mg/kgBW. Then the data will be processed using the Statiscal Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program. Results:In this study, administration of cinnamon extract at doses of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg in UUO white rats resulted in a significant decrease in urea levels. Meanwhile, the administration of cinnamon extract at a dose of 50 mg/kgbw also decreased urea levels, but not significantly in this study. Doses of 100 mg/kg body weight and 200 mg/kg body weight were more effective in reducing urea levels compared to dose of 50 mg/kg body weight. The lowest levels of urea were shown in the group of rats given cinnamon extract at doses of 100 mg/kgBW and 200 mg/kgBW compared to positive controls. Conclusion: Cinnamon extract doses of 100 mg/kgBW and 200 mg/kgBW were the most effective doses in reducing urea levels and preventing the progression of the renal fibrosis process in Wistar male white rats with Unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) treatment.
