Abstract

The research was aimed at comparing the biological parameters of L. sativaeThe research was conducted atfeeding on leaves of cucumber and tomato.Laboratory of Entomology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University fforn April to October 2005, comprising of observation on immature development, longevity offemale adult and the insect fecundity.Stadium of L. sativae egg on cucumber was 5.18 ± 0.86 days, while ontomato was 4.96 ± 0.71 days. The larval development period was 4.41 ± 1.02 dayson cucumber and 2.37 ± 0.56 days on tomato. The pupal development period was9.49 ±2.10 days on cucumber and 9.67 ± 0.90 days on tomato. The period ofdevelopment from egg to adult emergence was 19.39 ± 2.35 days on cucumber and18.77 ± 0.42 days on tomato. The pupal weight of L. sativae feeding on cucumberwas 0.29 ± 0.09 mg and 0.28 ± 0.14 mg for the miner feeding on tomato. Thepercentage of pupal transformation was 79.94 ± 22.02% for L. sativae feeding cucumber and 95.00 ± 15.81% for the miner living on tomato. The percentage of adult emergence was 60.39 ± 33.98% for L. sativae feeding on cucumber and 87.50 ± 21.255 for the miner living on tomato. The female progeny was 64.21 ± 15.46% on cucumber and 70.00 ± 32.20% on tomato. The longevity of female adultonwas11.40 ± 7.78 days for L. sativae living on cucumber and 16.60 ±3.10 days for the miner living on tomato. The fecundity was 26.50 ± 11.83 eggs per a female on cucumber and 25.10 ± 10.05 eggs per a female on tomato. In tomato, the fluctuation o f Z. sativae longevity sharply decreased after 12 days old, while in tomato thefluctuation ended seven days erlier. The period of larval development and the percentage of transformation from larvae to adult of L. sativae living on cucumber was significantly different fromthose of L. sativae living on tomato. However, the egg stadium, pupal stadium, egg-adult emergence development, pupal weight, percentage of pupal transformation, sexratio, longevity of female adult, and fecundity of L. sativae living on cucumber werenot significantly different from those of L. sativae living on tomato.Overall, tomato was better compared to cucumber in supporting the life of L. sativae. This because of shorter larval development and higher percentage of larva- adult transformation. Therefore, mass production of L. sativae in a laboratory should be conducted using tomato as host plant.
