Abstract
The objective of the research was to study mechanical properties of composite material from sawdust and plastic thermoplastic as matrix. This research was done at Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, Sriwijaya Polytechnic Palembang to tensile and impact testing which was started on January 2009 until April 2009. Data was analyzed by using tabulation method with percentage volume of sawdust as particle direction treatment. Particle treatment of speciment with the percentage sawdust is two orientation consisting volume 50 %, 25% , and specimen without sawdust as control. The observed parameters at tensile test were as follows: thick of specimen (m), wide of specimen (m), sample elongation (m), sample elongation after fracture (m), and tensile test uitimate by fracture of specimen (N). The observed parameters at impact test is swing of beater (degree), beater weight (kg), swing of beater after ffacture specimen (degree) and impact energy after beater hit (Joule). Tensile and impact test result showed that strength tensile of composyte was influenced by quantity of sawdust. The highest average result showed tensile strength was 2,917 x 106 N/m2 , the main strain was 8,067% and the main stress was 2,246 x 106 N/m2 at particle composite with 75:25. Average modulus elasticity 2,300 x 106 N/m2 at particle composite with percentage 50 : 50 and average impact strength was 0,623 Joule to fracture speciment.
