Abstract

The reaserch objective was to know the effect of modification of chopping unit with addition retaining material on the performance of power thresher to be straw chopper. This research was conducted on August until December 2018 at Machinery Workshop of Horticultural and Food Crops Agricultural Department South Sumatra Province and Laboratory of Agricultural Technology Department Workshop, Sriwijaya University. This research used engineering design which was presented in tables, pictures and graphs. The practice of this research was consisted of three steps those were design, assembling, structural design testing, functional design testing and performance testing. The parameters was observed of this research were chopping work capacity (kg/hour), chopping yield uniformity (%), yield (%), and fuel requirements (liters/hour). The result of this research showed that the modification of chopping unit on straw chopper with addition of material retaining at chopping unit can reduce the percentage of straw content left to the tool to be smaller, only 12.4%. The average of test results this straw chopper a counting capacity is 15.14 kg/hours, 35.49% of uniformity of sizes less than 2 cm , 63.45% size 2 cm to 5 cm, 1.06% size of more than 5 cm, 75.6% of yields and 0.67 liters/hour of fuel requirements.
