Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to describe students' mathematical communication skills in the material of flat-sided shapes. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII 1 at SMP NEGERI 46 PALEMBANG in the academic year 2020/2021. This type of research is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The research method used is a written test and interviews. The results of this study show 1) The percentage of written ability (the ability to state and express situations, real objects, and images into mathematical ideas or models using their own language) obtained 23.08 % of students who have high written ability, 46.15 % of students who have sufficient written ability , and 30.77% of students who have low written ability. 2) The percentage of drawing ability (the ability to express, express and describe mathematical ideas in the form of pictures, real objects, graphics or visual mathematical models) obtained 61.54% of students have high drawing abilities, 7.69% of students have sufficient drawing skills, 23.08% of students have low drawing ability, and 7.69% of students are not known or their drawing ability cannot be analyzed. 3) The percentage of mathematical expression ability (the ability to express everyday events in mathematical language or symbols to present ideas and solve a mathematical problem) obtained 38.46 % of students have high mathematical expression ability, 61.54% of students have sufficient mathematical expression ability and 0% of students have low mathematical expression ability.
