Abstract

Cadmium is a heavy metal that being used by several industries such as plastics, battery, etc, for processing their products. The use of cadmium in industrial process has consecquency of producing waste water containing cadmium which pollute the environment. The objectives of the study was to evaluate the effectivity of water hyacinth in accumulating cadmium (Cd). Cd were given at different concentrations i.e 1 and 5 ppm for 43 days. Total Cd content in roots and shoots increased significantly with the increased of Cd concentration to the medium. The highest Cd accumulation was 1636 mg/kg dry-Weight in roots and 580 mg/kg dry-weight in shoots at 5 ppm Cd-treated plant after 43 days. It was found that E. crassipes potential to be used as accumulator plant, as indicated by its high Bioconcentration Factors (BCF) value. The highest level of BCF for Cd was found in 1 ppm Cd and 5 ppm were 366 and 443.01, respectively. These value considered as high catagories, because BCF > 1000. Most pronounced effects of Cd was observed at concentration of 5 ppm, with root and shoot dry-weight were reduced by 63% and 54%, respectively.
