Abstract

Background : Obesity is a condition in which there is an accumulation of excessive fat tissue in the body due to an imbalance between energy intake and energy use in an extended time. The rate of obesity in adolescents has increased 10 fold in the last 40 years. Several risk factors related to obesity include: low level of physical activity, high sedentary activity, and high consumption of fast food. This study aims to identify risk factors of obesity among school adolescents in Palembang City Methods : This study is an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional study design. The samples were students from SMPN10, SMA Methodist, SMA Pusri, and SMK Telenika who met the inclusion criteria and were taken using the proportional random sampling technique in one take. Measurements of height and weight as well as filling out a questionnaire were carried out to obtain primary data. Results : The research sample was 158 school students who met the inclusion criteria. The results of statistical tests showed that the factors that were significantly related and became the risk factors for obesity in school adolescents were physical activity (p-value = 0.003; OR = 3,333); sedentary activity (p-value = 0.006; OR = 3,066); and fast food consumption (p-value = 0.000; OR = 7,704). Conclusion : Adolescents with low physical activity, high sedentary activity, and high consumption of fast food have a higher risk of obesity.
