Abstract

Background: Dental age is the age of the teeth which is determined based on the stage of tooth eruption and tooth formation or tooth maturation. Dental age is a good indicator for evaluating the biological age of a growing child because it is less affected by variations in nutritional and endocrine status than other biological age methods, and experiences less variation in relation to chronological age. Several methods can be used to estimate dental age using panoramic radiographs, one of which is the Demirjian and Nolla methods. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in dental age using the Demirjian and Nolla method on panoramic radiographs at the Special Dental and Oral Hospital, South Sumatra Province. Method: This study was an analytic observational with a cross-sectional design using 380 panoramic radiographs of children aged 6-15 years for the period 2019-2021 at the at the Special Dental and Oral Hospital radiology installation. Dental age on panoramic radiographs was observed and analyzed by looking at the growth and development of teeth using the Demirjian and Nolla method, while chronological age was obtained by subtracting the date of radiograph taken with the patient's date of birth. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Result: The Wilcoxon test showed no significant difference between chronological age and dental age using the Demirjian method (p-value > 0.05), while the significant difference between dental age using the Nolla method and chronological age (p-value <0.05). Conclusion: There are differences in the value of dental age using the Demirjian and Nolla method in estimating the age of children 6-15 years.
