Abstract
Conversion of glucose and fructose using sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid in water as medium to form levulinic acid has been carried out systematically. The results showed that only fructose can be converted into levulinic acid with hydrochloric acid as catalyst with the yield 1.69% and reaction time for 5 hours. The extended reaction time until 10 hours did not produce levulinic acid. Glucose did not success be converted into levulinic acid using neither sulfuric acid nor hydrochloric acid as catalyst. The extended reaction time until 10 hours for conversion of glucose also did not produce levulinic acid but ethyl ester formed as by product.
