Abstract
Brown algae are one of potential source of bioactive compounds derived from the marine environment which has different characteristic to that of terrestrial environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity potential of brown algae extracts (Sargassum duplicatum, Padina australis, and Turbinaria ornata) from Lampung Bay. The methods in this study were including sampling and measurement of environmental parameters, sample preparation, extraction, egg hatching (preparation of tested animal), toxicity testing by using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BLST) method, and data analysis. The results showed the extract of three different brown algae species extracted with two different solvents (methanol and ethyl acetate) were toxic toward A. salina larvae. The LC50 value of S. duplicatum extracted with methanol and ethyl acetate were 261.35 and 165,95 ppm respectively. The LC50 value of methanol extract of P. australis was 166,55 ppm, while the ethyl acetate extract was 19.014 ppm. Furthermore, the methanol extract of T. ornata showed LC50 value 487,27 ppm and ethyl acetate extract 151.06 ppm. The highest toxicity potential was on P. australis extracted with ethyl acetate.
