Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menguji kineija mesin penghancur tandan kosong kelapa sawit. Penelitian dilakukan sejak bulan Januari 2009 sampai dengan Mei 2009 di Bengkel Jurusan Teknologi Pertanian, Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Sriwijaya, Indralaya. Tandan kosong yang dibuang dalam kondisi utuh menyebabkan material ini sulit dan membutuhkan waktu lama untuk proses dekomposisi. Tenggang waktu inilah yang mengundang kedatangan lalat yang memang menyukai tempat-tempat yang bau. Dekomposisi bahan organik dapat dipercepat dengan cara pengecilan ukuran hingga tersedia cukup banyak ruang bagi bakteri pembusuk untuk bekeija. Untuk itu dirancang dan dibuat mesin penghancur tandan kosong kelapa sawit dengan tujuan utama mempersingkat waktu dekomposisi dan mengurangi ruang yang dibutuhkan untuk penumpukan tandan kosong. Tahapan yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini adalah tahapan perancangan mesin (menghasilkan gambar Teknik mesin), pembuatan mesin, dan pengujian mesin. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah bahwa mesin yang dirancang dapat bekeija untuk menghancurkan tandan kosong kelapa sawit dengan kapasitas keija efektif 145 kilogram per jam pada kecepatan putaran silinder rata-rata 369,33 rpm. Kecepatan putaran pada kondisi tanpa beban adalah 410 rpm. Hasil penghancuran berbentuk seperti serabut kelapa (coconut) dengan panjang rata-rata 2,73 cm dan diameter ratarata 0,01 cm.
