Abstract
Ash contained in coal or ash content greatly affects the quality of coal. Standard use of ash in PLTU requires coal with an ash content value of 7.8%. So that the coal washing process is needed to reduce the ash content. This study focuses on improving the quality of coal by reducing the ash content of coal using a hydrocyclone with a variable height of the overflow position of 45 cm, 51 cm, and 57 cm. The results of the experiment will be carried out laboratory tests to determine the ash content of coal before and after the experiment is carried out. Based on the results of the study, it can be seen that the higher the overflow position used, the lower the ash content of the coal or the higher the quality of the coal produced. The most ideal conditions in the experiment are when using the overflow position height of 51 cm and 57 cm where the coal ash content obtained is 7.705% and 6.555%, respectively. Under these conditions, the ash content of coal has met the standard for using ash in steam power plant (PLTU).
