Abstract

Bentonite has been modified into Na-bentonite by exchanging cations at the distance between the montmorillonite layers with Na+ cations from saturated sodium chloride solution. The modified Na-bentonite was then used as an adsorption agent for the anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate. Characterization of Na-Bentonite and bentonite was using FT-IR, SEM-EDX and XRD. The results of FT-IR characterization showed that in bentonite and Na-bentonite there was a shift in wave number from 3396 cm-1 to 3380 cm-1 caused by the vibration of the O-H bond which decreased the bond frequency. The results of SEM characterization of Na-bentonite showed higher homogeneity due to cation exchange. EDX analysis showed that the highest oxide was obtained by SiO2 54.03% and Al2O3 17.24%. The number of Na+ cations in bentonite before this modification was detected as much as 0.07 and in Na-bentonite the number of Na+ cations increased to 0.81. The results of XRD analysis showed that Na-bentonite had an increasing distance between planes after being applied as an adsorbent of sodium lauryl sulfate and the particle size of Na-bentonite gets smaller with increasing temperature adsorption. The optimum time variation was found at 40 minutes with an adsorption percent of 82.12% and adsorption capacity is 2.05 mg/g. In bentonite before modification, the adsorption percentage was 33.7% with a adsorption capacity is 0.842 mg/g. The data of sodium lauryl sulfate adsorption kinetics is more in line with the pseudo second order model. The weight variation of Na-bentonite adsorbent showed optimum results at a weight of 0.04 grams with a percent effectiveness of 82,49%. The highest adsorption capacity of the adsorbent Na-bentonite was 10.09 mg/g and bentonite before modification reached an adsorption capacity of 7.58 mg/g. The isotherm parameter that corresponds to the adsorption of sodium lauryl sulfate is the Freundlich isotherm parameter. The change in enthalpy (∆H) produces a negative value, the change in entropy and Gibbs free energy indicates the spontaneity of the adsorption process.
