Abstract

Citronella leaves (Cymbopogon nardus L) and kaffir lime leaves (Citrus hystrix D.C.) essential oils contain citronellal, geraniol, geranyl acetate, and citronellyl acetate compounds which contain alcohol and aldehyde groups in their structure, which function as antibacterial and antioxidant. The lack of utilization of citronella leaves and kaffir lime leaves as natural ingredients that are efficacious in the development of nanoemulsion preparations is expected to optimize the concentration of kaffir lime leaf oil, tween 80, and PEG 400 in the nanoemulsion formulation of citronella oil. This study aims to obtain the optimum conditions of the citronella leaves oil nanoemulsion formula. The results of the characterization of citronella leaves included a specific gravity of 0.8819 ± 0.001 g/mL; solubility in ethanol 80% 1:1.7 ml; identification of yellow-brown color; acid number 2.0778 ± 0.69; and identification of FTIR with aliphatic -CH- (2914,81 cm-1) functional groups, C=C Alkenes (1654,81 cm-1) , and -CH2 (1376,52 cm-1). Citronella leaves essential oil was formulated into a nanoemulsion dosage form using various concentrations of kaffir lime leaf oil, tween 80 and PEG 400. The three variations were optimized using the Design Expert 12 program with the Central Composite Design approach, which obtained 14 run formulas. The preparations were evaluated for physical properties, namely organoleptic, homogeneity, percent transmittance, specific gravity, viscosity, pH, stability, hedonic, as well as particle testing for the optimum formula. The test results were analyzed by DX12 to get the optimum formula. The optimum concentration of kaffir lime leaves oil was 2.095%, tween 80 15%, and PEG 400 19.763%. The results of the evaluation of the optimum formula for the specified factors resulted in a transmittance of 98.67%, a specific gravity of 1.0626 g/mL, and a viscosity of 3.30014 cPa.s.
