Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding has important benefits for both children and mothers, but the proportion of exclusive breastfeeding is still not evenly distributed between regions. The purpose of this study was to analyze exclusive breastfeeding by region in Indonesia and the factors that influence it. This study uses secondary data from the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey. The research sample is 1,621 consisting of mothers who have their last child under 6 months old who are still alive, do not have twins and live with their children. Data were analyzed using Quantum GIS and binary logistic regression statistical tests. The results showed that respondents who gave exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia were 51.6%. The highest proportion of exclusive breastfeeding was in the Nusa Tenggara region at 72.3% and the lowest was in the Kalimantan region at 37.5%. Mothers who live in the Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Java-Bali and Sumatra regions have a higher chance of exclusive breastfeeding compared to mothers in the Kalimantan region. The factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding vary widely in all regions, where the age of the child is the only common factor associated with exclusive breastfeeding in all regions except for the Kalimantan region. This study shows wide variation in regional proportions and determinants of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia. Appropriate policies and strategies are needed to increase exclusive breastfeeding in all regions to reduce inequality.
