Abstract

Background. Malignant lymphoma is a type of malignant disease that attacks the lymphoid systems , especially lymphocyte cells and its precursors, whether of T cell, B cell , or null phenotypes. Information about patients with malignant lymphoma is not complete enough, so the study about prevalence and characteristics of patients with malignant lymphoma are necessary to provide the informations about malignant lymphoma specifically: Materials and methods. The descriptive observational study using a secondary data which were retrieved from the medical record of the Department of Pathological Anatomy, Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang from January 2006 until December 2010. The sample was 134 people with malignant lymphoma who underwent histopathological examination were observed for prevalence and characteristic of sex. Only 130 people who have completed data for characteristic of age and number of malignant lymphoma based on the classification, and only 117 people can be observed for the tissue origins. Results. The prevalence of malignant lymphoma in 2006 by 0,19%; 0,33% in 2007 and 2008; 0,87% in 2009, and 0,64% in 2010. The largest number of patients is in 2009. Out of total 130 patients, the number of HL is 20% and NHL is 80% (ratio 1:4). Most patients with malignant lymphoma is in 51-60 years (26,2%), with HL 34,6% and NHL 24,8%. Out of total 134 patients, more malignant lymphoma in males (60,45%) than in female (39,55%), so ratio is 3:2. Based on the classification, the percentage of HL and NHL as large, 61,5% of male and 38,5% of female (ratio 1,6:1). Origin of most tissues is in lymph nodes (44,6%), colli (20,5%), andtonsil (8,5%). Conclusion* The prevalence of malignant lymphoma has increased during 4 years (2006-2009) and then decreased in 2010 with the largest number of patients in 2009. Most types of malignant lymphoma is NHL. The most patients of malignant lymphoma is occurred from 51-60 years and percent of male is bigger than percent of female (3:2), and most of tissue origin are derived from lymph nodes.
