Abstract
Background: The use of cosmetics widespread in society lately has led to an of incidence number increase of skin disorders. One of them is acne vulgaris.The highest prevalence of acne vulgaris at 16-17 years old is woman about 83-85%.Acne vulgaris is a State of chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicles, characterized by the presence of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules and also scars. This disorder is caused by misused cosmetic, excessive usage, changing cosmetic, and used of the active ingredients cosmetics. Therefore a research was conducted with the aim to see the correlation between severity of acne vulgaris levels and various types of cosmetics usage. Method: This study was an analytic observational research. Population in this research was all female medical students of Sriwijaya University. Sample in this research were 138 female medical students of Sriwijaya University at the age of 17-22 years old.In this research sampling with consecutive method was used. Collected data were primary data obtained from questionnaires. Data were analyzed by using Chi-squre test, with significance level of p< 0.05. Results: There was a significance correlation between genetic factors and acne vulgaris. (p=0.021). There was no significance correlation between the use of cleansers and the levels of acne vulgaris, mild to severe (p=0.0509). There was a significance correlation the use of moisturizers (p=0.051), the use of powders (p=0.057), the use of sunscreen (p=0.025) and side effect of cosmetics usage acne vulgaris (34%).irritation (14.5%) and hyperpigmentation (1.4%). Conclusion: There was a significance correlation between various types of cosmetics usage and acne vulgaris onset in mild to severe levels.
