Abstract

Background: Obesity is currently one of the health problems that always have a strong relationship with modern society and plays an important role in the public health of the world. Many people who already know the impact of obesity, created a myth as a result of fear , for example is for not having their meals, especially breakfast. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of obesity in medical student of Sriwijaya University class of 2010 and 2011 regular, and also to determine the relationship between skipping breakfast and obesity. Methods: The study was analytic with cross sectional design. Medical student of Sriwijaya University class of 2010 and 2011 regular were the sample of this research consisting 253 subjects but only 251 subjects that meet the criteria of inclusion. Breakfast habbit data was obtained from questionnaires that were distributed to all subjects. Nutritional status data was obtained from BMI calculation. The research was conducted in October through December. Results: The results showed that 14 out of 15 obese men never have a breakfast. Similar results were also found in women's, the data show that 17 out of the 18 obese women never have a breakfast. Chi-square test showed that there was a relationship between skipping breakfast with obesity. Conclusion: The results of chi-square analysis showed that the habit of skipping breakfast has a relationship with obesity. Skipping breakfast is a risk factor for obesity.
