Abstract
The recirculation system is reusing water by rotating the water continuously on the container containing the filter media, which can be rearing the water quality of the rearing media. Activated charcoal is one of the filters that can be used because it has good absorbency. This study aimed to determine the best dose in the use of coconut shell activated charcoal filters in rearing water quality of koi fish rearing media. This research was conducted at the basic laboratory of the Fisheries Aquaculture Program Study, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya. Ammonia measurements were carried out at the Laboratory of Microbiology and Biotechnology of Agricultural Product Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya, and turbidity measurements were carried out at the Class I Environmental Health and Disease Control Engineering Center Palembang in July-August 2022. This research used a completely randomized design (RAL). It consisted of five treatments with three replications, namely: P0 (control), P1 (coconut shell charcoal without activation 10 g L-1), P2 (coconut shell charcoal without activation 15 g L-1), P3 (activated coconut shell charcoal 10 g L-1), P4 (activated coconut shell charcoal 15 g L-1). Parameters studied included water quality, fish weight growth, fish length growth, feed efficiency, and survival. Data analysis was done with the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test and if there is a fundamental difference, followed by the Least Significant Different (LSD) with a confidence interval of 95%. The results showed that using activated and non-activated coconut shell charcoal filters in rearing koi fish could increase the water quality. Activated coconut shell charcoal (size 5.6-8 mm) dose of 15 g L-1 (P4) resulted in the best treatment, which in temperature ranges from 27.5-280C water pH ranges from 6.7 to 6.9, dissolved oxygen 5.80 to 5.87 mg L-1, ammonia ranges from 0.05 to 0.06 mg L-1 and turbidity value of 0.06 NTU. Absolute weight growth showed 1.05 g with absolute length growth of 0.42 cm, feed efficiency of 42%, and 100% survival during preservation time. However, although using coconut shell charcoal as a water filter indicated a better result than the control (no filter treatment), there was no significantly different result whether using the activated or unactivated coconut shell charcoal.
