Abstract

Introduction: Senile Cataract is one of global threat for eyes healfh. In fact, senile cataract is the most common cause of blindness around the world, including Indonesia. Some studies showed that senile cataract have many kinds of risk factor, such as age, sex, and corticosteroid use. This study is made to identify the prevalence and to determine association between those factors with senile cataract. Methods: This study is using cross sectional design which conducted from July to December 2012 in Kecamatan Sukarami, Palembang. Multistage proportional random sampling to2 40 years old people is the sampling method for this study. The data was taken from structured interview and direct examination, then it analyzed with Chi-square test. Result: Prevalence of senile cataract in Kecamatan Sukarami Palembang is 32,5%. After analyzed, there is significant association between age and senile cataract with p value 0,000 and OR 12,2 (95% Cl; 4,93-30,01). Sex and senile cataract showed significant association with p value 0,044 and OR 2,23 (95% CJ; 1,01-4,91). The same result also showed between corticosteroid use and senile cataract wilhp value 0,036 and OR 5,81 (95% CI; 1,07-31,43). Conclusion: Prevalence of senile cataract in Kecamatan Sukarami, Palembang, is high enough. Age, sex, and corticosteroid use are associated with senile cataract. Above 60 years in age, female, and corticosteroid user that used it for 3 month or more are more risky to induced senile cataract compared to 40-59 years in age, man, and non-corticosteroid user.
