Abstract
After the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in the hand of a white policeman in America, the world is once more in uproar over the racism and police brutality towards Black people. In summer 2020, protests under the Black Lives Matter movement happened all around the world and catch the attention of everyone including news media in Indonesia. One of them is detikcom which is one of the most visited online news media in Indonesia. As one of the media who repeatedly published news about Black Lives Matter, detikcom have a great influence in shaping this movement image in society’s mind. How detikcom frame the Black Lives Matter in their news will determine how Indonesian perceive this anti-racism movement. This study aims to see how detikcom frame their Black Lives Matter news by using Gamson framing theory to analyse 16 news article regarding Black Lives Matter that was published by detikcom on detikNews channel during June 2020. The result from this study shows that detikcom tend to frame Black Lives Matter movement in positive light by repeatedly mentioned that this movement is an anti-racism movement that aims to achieve racial justice and end police brutality. However, another finding shows that detikcom also frame this movement as an overseas or foreign issue and have no relation with Indonesia.
