Abstract
Background: Low birth weight (LBW) is defined by WHO as birth weight of new bom infants less than 2500 grams. The incident of LBW in Indonesian Hospitals is around 20%. The infant mortality rate caused by LBW is 6,5 times higher than babies with normal birth weight. Among all the perinatal mortality, around 2-27% is caused by LBW. The risk factors associated with LBW are maternal age, gestational age, status of gravida, parity, and complications of maternal diseases. This study was conducted to determine factors that most contribute to babies bom with LBW in RSMH Palembang. Method: The study is a descriptive study with cross-sectional approach. The sample of this study is mothers with low birth weight babies at Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology RSMH Palembang from January lst to June 30lh2013. Results: This study took place from January lst to June 30th 2013, the percentage of patients who gave birth to babies with low birth weight is 23,5%. Patients with LBW babies in RSMH came with primipara (69,4%), interval between pregnancy 0-2 years (59,1%), preterm (57,5%), anemia (47,5%), preeclampsia (33,2%), age >35 years (16,6%), maternal chronic diseases (10,6%), and twin pregnancies (10%). Conclusion: Factors that most contribute to babies bom with LBW in RSMH are primipara, interval between pregnancy 0-2 years, and preterm.. Socialization about the importance of examining health during pregnancy is needed to anticipate LBW.
