Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is a condition where the blood pressure exceeds normal blood pressure. Blood pressure is considered normal if systolic blood pressure <120 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure <80 mmHg. Hypertension is an important risk factor that causes heart disease and blood vessels, and is often referred to as "the silent disease". Hypertension caused by a variety of risk factors such as advanced age, family history, being overweight, smoking, lack of physical activity, excessive sodium intake, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and stress. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of hypertension in the District of Uir Timur II Palembang in 2012. Methods: This study was conducted in November-December 2012 in the District of Ilir Timur II Palembang with observational analytic method. The study design used was cross sectional. The study popuiation were people aged >15 years. The number of samples is 512 units. Data of blood pressure, weight, and height obtained by direct measurement using a device with the method specified, and other data obtained by interview. Result: From the data in the District of Ilir Timur II Palembang obtained the total number of people with hypertension are as much as 182 (35.5%) of 512 patients were taken as the total popuiation sample. Conclusion: Age (p= 0.000), body mass index (p= 0.002), family history of hypertension (p= 0.001), and duration of smoking (p= 0.000) are the factors that affect the prevalence of hypertension in the District of Ilir Timur II Palembang in 2012.
