Abstract

Introduction: Standard therapy for diarrhea according to WHO 2006 reccomendation is rehydration, zinc, adequate nutrition, antibiotic selective and education to parents. Some studies suggest that administration of probiotics can help reduce the length of diarrhea. This study was conducted to determine the effect of probiotics as adjunctive therapy of diarrhea. Methods: this study is a case control by looking at the medical records of children under five year old with diarrhea in the Installation of Inpatient Siti Khadijah Moslem Hospital during January 1 to December 31, 2012. Result: from 138 patients with diarrhea, obtained 94 diarrhea patients consisting of 47 as cases and the same number as control as well as matching is done according to age and weight. Statistical analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between probiotics and <7 days diarrhea with a chi square value=0,031 and Odd Ratio=2,94. Conclusion: there is a relationship between probiotics as adjunctive therapy and diarrhea for patients aged >7 months is more sensitive to probiotic administration characterized by shortening the duration of diarrhea compared with patients aged <7 months.
