Abstract
Introduction: Decreased sensitivity is reduced sweet taste sensitivity to sweet tongue, so that the tongue can not detect sweet taste properly. One reason is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate contained in toothpaste. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is a function anionic surfactant lowers the surface tension, emulsify (dissolve fat) and gives the foam so that the removal of plaque, debris, material alba and food scraps becomes easier. This study aimed to see differences in sweetness sensitivity decreased after using toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulphate i n children aged 12-15 years. Methods: This type of research is clinical experimental pretest-posttest design. Research subjects consisted of 86 children divided into 2 groups, 43 samples for the group using dental toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulphate 5% and 43 samples for the group using toothpaste that does not contain sodium lauryl sulphate 5%. Each group assessed the sweetness decreased sensitivity using several different concentrations of sucrose solution. Data were analyzed using paired t-tes t (p <0.05). Results: In the group using dental toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulphate 5% showed a significant dijference between before and after using the toothpaste while the group using dental toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulphate 5% who did not show significant results. Conclusion: Sodium lauryl sulphate 5% can reduce the sensitivity of sweet taste.
