Abstract

Nutritional status is a State of bociy as result of food consumption and utilization of nutrients. Malnutrition is one of the causes of angular cheilitis, especially in children first and second decade of life. Angular cheilitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the skin and labial mucous membranes at the corner of the mouth that is characterized by redness, moist base of the lesion, and deepfissure. This study aimed t o determine whether nutritional status having a relationship with the occurrence of angular cheilitis on students of SDN 1 2 Rambutan Banyuasin. This study was an analytical survey with cross-sectional approach. This study has been done in SDN 12 Rambutan Banyuasin on 3rd-5th October, 2013. Total subjects were 183 children aged 5-11 years which selected by purposive sampling technique. Each subject was measured nutritional status and oral hygiene index simplified (OHI-S) and examined the State of the corner of his mouth t o determine the presence or absence of angular cheilitis. The results showed 89 subjects (48.6%) had thin nutritional status and 94 subjects (51.4%) had normal nutritional status. 72 subjects (39.3%) had good score of OHI-S, 106 subjects (58%) was quite good, and 5 subjects (2.7%) waspoor. Angular cheilitis was found in 12 subjects (6.6%). Based on the statistical test with chi-square obtained P-value/Sig. 0,013 (p<0,05). It can be concluded that there is a signijicant relationship between nutritional status with the occurrence of angular cheilitis on students of SDN 12 Rambutan Banyuasin. In a next study, it is suggested to be more specific with the biochemical study about nutritional status as the causes of angular cheilitis.
